Canadian Minister of Intergovernmental Affairs Dominic LeBlanc - Member of Parliament for the riding of Beausejour, NB since 2000 - said recently in an interview with CBC, in reference to the possibility of engaging in conversations with US officials about reopening the US-Canada land border:
“This doesn’t feel like the right moment to have those conversations...for the moment, there's no active discussion [about] adjusting those [public health] measures."
The US-Canada land border has been closed since March 2020 because of concerns about the spread of COVID-19. The current closure order is set to expire on Wednesday this week, but is expected to be extended once again.
With 331M residents and 31.5M confirmed cases of COVID-19, the US currently has an incidence rate of 9.5%, while Canada with 37M residents and 1.1M confirmed cases has an incidence rate of 3.0%.
Canada is an important source market for US tourism, particularly for Florida and the New England and other states bordering on Canada.
