In a presentation today for regional DMO Discover New England, Travel Market Insights president Scott Johnson made the case that Canada is the international market of greatest potential for New England tourism destinations and businesses in 2021 and 2022.
Details:
- New England has traditionally been a favorite destination of Canadians.
- Drive market will lead the rebound of visitation from Canada, because air routes will reopen more slowly.
- 2021 visits to New England from Canada are projected to total about 8.8M, up from 4.8M in 2020.
- Land border remains closed but vaccination rollout - the primary obstacle to reopening - in Canada is expanding after a slow start; all Canadians are expected to have received one shot by summer.
- The Canadian dollar is nearing a 3-year high of US$0.815.
- Canadian GDP has grown 6.5% to date in 2021, vs. 5.4% shrinkage in 2020.
Comment:
The border closure is being reviewed monthly, most recently on 21 April. So the next review will occur next week. Have you kept your Canada marketing on? If not, better restart now. And including information on health and safety precautions being taken for visitors to where you are would not come amiss.
