Following closure of Mexico's in-market tourism offices by President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, national tourism association CNET has asked the federal government for 2B pesos - about $106M - from DNR tourist-tax revenues to support the creation of a new destination-marketing agency.
DNR funds will more likely go toward creation of a Maya Train route - a project favored by the President.
The government has said plans are in the works for a new "self-financing tourism promotion model," while the Confederación de Cámaras Nacionales de Comercio, Servicios y Turismo (CONCANACO) has said that it has invited tourism organizations and businesses to participate in organizing and running a privately-funded DMO to begin operations later this year.
I don't think everyone is on the same page here. Stay tuned.
