ME Gov. Janet Mills announced yesterday that because of new outbreaks of COVID-19 linked to bar reopenings in other states, reopening of Maine bars for indoor service - which had been scheduled for 1 July - will be postponed until further notice.
Bars can currently open for outdoor seated service, but most are suffering a significant loss of revenue by being unable to serve indoors.
Maine CDC Director Dr. Nirav Shah said:
“Recent outbreaks related to indoor bar service in multiple states raise concerns. As we learn more about how the virus spreads, duration and density – specifically being in close quarters inside, as is the case with most bars – clearly elevate the risk of virus transmission.”
The Mills Administration strongly urges Maine people and businesses to follow State and US health requirements and recommendations including wearing face coverings, staying 6 feet apart, and washing hands often.
It looks like the disadvantage of being unable to serve customers indoors will be continuing into the summer for bar owners who depend on Maine's high season for tourism for the biggest piece of their annual sales and cash flow.
