Via deed filed in Penobscot County on 23 August 2016 Roxanne Quimby's foundation transferred 87,654 acres east of Baxter State Park to the US Department of the Interior.
This clears the way for President Obama to designate this parcel of land a National Monument - which it's believed he plans to do this week on the 100th anniversary of the creation of the US National Park System.
