The Boston Athletic Association announced yesterday that the 2021 Boston Marathon - traditionally run on the Massachusetts Patriots Day holiday, the 3rd Monday in April - will be postponed "at least until the fall of 2021".
BAA is working with local, state and city officials and the COVID-19 Medical & Event Operations Advisory Group which was formed in September to advise BAA leadership as to when and how the marathon can next be held safely.
The 2020 Boston Marathon was postponed from April to October, then canceled.
BAA says it hopes to announce a 2021 date before the end of this year, and that further information including registration opening date and field size will be forthcoming.
In 2019, the last time the event was held, the marathon drew 30,000 participants, including 7600 runners, and put more than $200M into the economy of metro Boston.
