Vermont Governor Phil Scott has vetoed house bills that would have used $34.5M - from unexpected tax revenue, and a settlement from the tobacco industry - to fund future teacher pension obligations. Instead, Scott wants to use the money to pay down this year's property taxes to prevent taxpayers from seeing an increase.
Disagreement between Scott and Legislators on this issue has the potential to shut down Vermont's government - and close state parks that are popular summer tourist destinations - on 1 July 2018.
