Survey data collected last week by Canadian national tourist board Destination Canada suggest that the majority of Canadians would not feel safe traveling in the US right now, and have even greater concerns about traveling overseas.
Responses varied by region, but sentiment about US and overseas travel was uniformly negative.
Share of survey respondents who said they agreed or strongly agreed with the statement "I feel safe to travel in the US / Internationally":
British Columbia: 24%/ 20%
Alberta: 35% / 31%
Saskatchewan and Manitoba: 34% / 31%
Ontario: 34% / 27%
Quebec: 34% / 33%
Atlantic Provinces: 20% / 16%
New Englanders and New Yorkers in the tourism business - who have recently been told by experts that Canada is the international market of greatest potential for tourism and economic recovery this year - will find these numbers for QC, ON and the Atlantic Provinces alarming.
