The Bureau of Consular Affairs of the US Department of State has announced the launch of a pilot program for online passport renewal.
The State Department is seeking up to 25,000 applicants to initiate in August 2022 a renewal application online here: travel.state.gov/content/t...passport/renew-online.html
Eligibility requirements for online renewal under this pilot program are:
- Age 25 or older
- Most recent passport valid for 10 years and issued between 2007 and 2013 (may be expired)
- No changes to name, etc. as appearing on passport
- Not traveling out of the country for at least 5 weeks from application date
- Regular tourist passport only
- Live in US state or territory
- You have your passport, it's not damaged or reported lost/stolen
- You can pay for renewal using a credit or debit card or via ACH transfer
- You can upload a digital passport photo in JPEG format
- You must accept that your most recent passport will be immediately canceled upon submission of renewal application.
If you meet all eligibility requirements and want to proceed with online renewal, you must:
- Create a MyTravelGov account at www.travel.state.gov/conte.../about-us/mytravelgov.html
- You will receive a verification email. Click the link.
- Wait up to 24 hours for your account to become active.
- Log in to your account and begin the application process starting from "Renew Passport" option.

Online service will not be available 13-14 August because of server maintenance.
If the 25,000-person pilot is filled when your application is received, you may have an opportunity to renew online at a later date.
