Travel advisories issued by numerous countries - including the USA, Canada, UK, Saudi Arabia, UAE, Russia, Australia, Israel and Taiwan - label India an unsafe destination because of widespread protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act passed on 12 December 2019.
Reasons for the protests include potential changes in immigration patterns that would disadvantage current residents, and what's taken to be discrimination against Muslim and other non-Hindu immigrants.
As of 27 December, protests had resulted in 28 deaths (some resulting from the use of live ammunition by police), widespread destruction of public and private property, and thousands of arrests.
Many hotels are already fully booked for late December - early January.
Can the Indian government keep tourists safe? Stay tuned for updates.
