The beach on uninhabited Ko Phi Phi Leh Island in the Strait of Malacca where the Leonardo DiCaprio film The Beach was set has been closed to tourists since 2018 in an attempt to reverse damage - resulting from overtourism of up to 5000 people a day - to the nearby coral reef. The beach was expected to reopen in 2019, but the Thai Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation announced last week that the site will remain closed until 2021 "to allow its ecology to fully recover."
