UK and EU have been engaged in Brexit negotiations since June, and had planned to begin talks on trade in October.
Barnier now says that the UK government will need to clarify what its Brexit plan is by 24 November in order to start trade talks before the first of next year.
Key issues including the amount of settlement payments the UK owes the EU, the Irish border and rights of EU and UK citizens remain to be resolved.
Theresa May's government needs to get going on this, or in March 2019 the UK will be leaving the EU without a trade deal, and the Island of Ireland will have a customs frontier through it.
