The estimated $12M/year revenue raised by the tax is supposed to be used to support the local non-profit DMO - presumably Ottawa Tourism.
The Ottawa Gatineau Hotel Association already collects a 3% room-night fee from 52 member hotels.
The city says it plans to start collecting the new tax from Airbnb landlords also - with expected revenue of $300K/year. Wanting to make it harder for Airbnb landlords to wiggle out of the tax is the city's motivation for applying it to B&Bs as well as hotels.
Some B&B owners are protesting that the necessary bookkeeping will be onerous for them.
