US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson said at the end of February this year that his department was "giving some names" of candidates to the White House.
The US envoy position has been vacant since January 2017.
Ireland Taioseach Dr. Leo Varadkar will be visiting Washington at St. Patrick's Day, but no NI First Minister or Deputy First Minister is currently in office.
It's hoped that naming a new American envoy will enable progress to be made toward resuscitating the devolved power-sharing NI government and ensuring continued implementation of the Good Friday Agreement.

However: per Trump tweet just now (13 March 2018 AM) CIA Director Mike Pompeo will be replacing Rex Tillerson as US Secretary of State forthwith.
Hope this doesn't cause a reset of the NI Special Envoy recruitment process.
