Discover Newport - the regional Rhode Island DMO for 6 towns in Newport County and 3 in Bristol County - announced this week that it will be giving up its lease on 7,000 sf of the Gateway Center where it has operated its Visitor Center for the past 32 years
Technological changes in the tourism industry, accelerated by the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic this spring, have led to Discover Newport suffering a catastrophic loss of revenue - more than 90% of which comes from hotel taxes - and laying off 18 of 22 staff.
Discover Newport President/CEO Evan Smith says the organization will be pursuing a new business model, with more emphasis on destination marketing and sales, and possibly opening a downsized visitor center in the future.
The State of Rhode Island currently requires visitors coming from a state with a COVID-19 positivity rate greater than 5% to either self-quarantine for 14 days or provide proof of a recent negative COVID-19 test.
Restricted states include:
- Alabama
- Arizona
- Arkansas
- California
- Colorado
- Florida
- Georgia
- Idaho
- Indiana
