The Las Vegas Convention & Visitors Authority this week launched a national ad campaign on cable and broadcast TV tied to National Football League broadcasts throughout the month of September. Ads will invite people to come to Las Vegas - especially midweek, to replace convention attendees - and watch and bet on their teams in sportsbooks.
For summer 2020, LVCVA had been running online ads in regional markets San Diego, San Francisco and Phoenix letting people know that the city is open for business, but with masks and social distancing.
Lack of convention business dropped Las Vegas hotel occupancy to an average of 37% midweek in July vs. its normal 89%. Passenger volume passing through McCarran International Airport was down 64% in July.
Nevada continues to limit attendance at gatherings to 50, so meeting and convention business is expected to still be off significantly in fall 2020.
