Following the shutdown earlier this year of the Mexico Tourism Board, these 9 Mexican states have agreed to cooperate on tourism promotion:
- Quintana Roo
- Baja California Sur
- Yucatan
- Aguascalientes
- Chihuahua
- Durango
- Guanajuato
- Queretaro
- Tamaulipas
The partners have announced these 6 goals of their initiative:
- Investment alliances
- Connections with the outside
- Tourist and hospitality culture
- Boosting sustainable tourism
- Links with research, science and technology
- Strengthening of the social fabric
Tourism Secretary Miguel Torruco Marques said in April:
"There’s a presidential policy [of Andrés Manuel López Obrador] of saving, of Republican austerity, because we must have the resources to have the support of the local population...A quiet, hardworking, safe country is the best promotion for any of its tourist attractions."
Tourism accounts for about 9% of Mexico's GDP.
