The Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs of the European Parliament has announced in a media release that the EU Digital COVID Certificate (EUDCC) framework will remain in place for another 13 months, to 30 June 2023.
The EUDCC QR code shows proof of being fully vaccinated, testing negative, or recovery from an infection in the past 6 months.
The new changes to the EUDCC rules also enable EU member states to grant test certificates based on new types of antigen tests.
Rule changes will be reviewed after 6 months.
Members of the European Parliament amended the rule changes to stress that member states should avoid additional restrictions on the freedom of movement for EUDCC holders unless absolutely necessary, based on scientific advice from the ECDC and the EU health Security Committee.
This development is a potentially troublesome one for unvaccinated persons wishing to travel in Europe in summer 2022, since many EU countries still require the EUDCC as proof of a negative PCR test result. And those who received their first COVID shots in the summer of 2021 now likely are holding expired EUDCCs.
