NBC News reports:
"The increased cadence in terror attacks targeting European tourist destinations both major and minor has dealt double-digit blows to travel, with global tourism spending down 14 percent in June, according to a recent report by UBS."
Impacts:
- Nice: Cruise lines trips and port calls canceled, Rihanna concert canceled, Nice Jazz Festival canceled.
- Egypt, France, Tunisia, Turkey have all seen drops in arrivals between 11 and 20% following 2016 attacks.
- Travelers are switching their summer holiday plans from Continental Europe to Scotland, Latin America and other destinations perceived as safer - in some cases even western Africa.
- Stocks of major tour operators have plummeted: Thomas Cook -47%, TUI -32% since January.
- Hotels across Europe are offering discounts of up to 20%.
- US-Europe airfares are at near-record lows.
But for some travelers, the savings are worth the risk.
And airline prices will begin to rise soon as carriers begin removing capacity for the winter.
