According to the ETC's Long Haul Travel Barometer, in the first half of 2017 daily per-person spending of American visitors to Europe breaks down like this:

  • Up to 50 EUR: 4%
  • 50-100 EUR: 29%
  • 100-200 EUR: 32%
  • >200 EUR: 26%

Spending by Americans is dwarfed by that of Chinese visitors, 77% of whom spend more than 200 EUR a day.

But bear in mind there are some indications that the big-spending Chinese tourists are investing a lot of that money that destinations are counting as normal tourism spend.

Top destinations for Americans - 61% of whom visited more than one European country - in autumn 2017 were:

  1. France 40%
  2. Italy 34%
  3. UK 32%
  4. Germany 27%
  5. Spain 20%

78% of Chinese tourists visited more than one country, and 59% visited France.
