Tories in chaos as UK goes rudderless
Liz Truss announced her resignation as UK PM in a media conference yesterday outside 10 Downing Street after a 6-week term of office marked by chaos and the collapse of financial markets.
Conservative Party (Tory) lawmakers will select a new PM later this week. (FYI: In the UK, the Prime Minister is not elected by vote of the people, but simply selected by the members of Parliament of the dominant political party - in this case the Conservatives, aka Tories.)
At this time, because of friction that has existed since Brexit between factions of the Tory party, there is no clear successor. One solution would be to call a general election, but the Tories - who have been in power for 12 years, under regrettable PMs Theresa May and Boris Johnson - won't do that because they are well behind in polls of the electorate.
