EU Chief Negotiator Michel Barnier has warned that Brexit negotiations could reach a stalemate unless the UK comes up soon with an acceptable proposal for maintaining an open Ireland-NI border.
Ireland Tanaiste Simon Coveney says his government will have "serious questions" about the UK's commitment to an open border if the issue isn't resolved by June 2018.
The EU has proposed a "backstop" solution that would require the UK to participate in a common regulatory area with the EU. UK PM Theresa has said that won't happen; but also that there will be no hard Ireland-NI border. EU officials dismiss this as "magical thinking."
Stay tuned.
