Expect widespread public sector strikes across France tomorrow
Following 2 weeks of strikes at oil refineries in France resulting from union-management disagreement over the need for pay raises under current conditions of high inflation, a shortage of all types of fuel at around 30% filling stations has led to long queues of motorists, fuel rationing and widespread discontent.
General public sector strikes are planned to begin tomorrow Tuesday 18 October 2022 which are expected to disrupt transportation across France.
The Government of France has advised motorists to avoid buying fuel to the extent possible.
PM Elizabeth Borne has threatened to force employees of oil companies Esso and Total to return to work.
The FCDO warning says in part:
There are planned strikes on Tuesday 18 October across different sectors in France, which could cause travel disruption. Please check with your travel operator before travelling...Some fuel station operators are limiting how much you can buy...There may be queues at fuel stations.
Comment: I'd say that bulletin from FCDO is a masterpiece of understatement. Don't travel to France tomorrow if you can possibly avoid it.
