Yesterday, just 3 days after nightclubs in France were allowed to reopen after 16 months of mandatory closure, President Emmanuel Macron announced that a strong resurgence of COVID-19 will require France to redouble efforts to expand vaccinations.
Mr. Macron also announced a proposal to enact a law requiring all health-care workers to be vaccinated by 15 September 2021.
Also: beginning 21 July, persons entering a cultural venue or amusement park will have to show proof of vaccination or a recent negative COVID-19 test. In August, this requirement will be extended to restaurants, shopping centers, hospitals, retirement homes and long-distance transportation.
4300 new COVID-19 infections were reported in France on Sunday 11 July alone.
The Scientific Council of France said in a report last week that controlling the fast-spreading Delta variant will require a vaccination rate of 90%-95% nationwide. At this point, only 36% of French residents are fully vaccinated.
This isn't good news for French tourism, or for anyone who is hoping to visit France this summer.
