The controversy over the newly-created Katahdin Woods and Waters National Monument rages on in Maine:
- Republican legislators opposed
- Democratic legislators exhibiting "mixed reactions"
- Maine House Republican Leader Ken Fredette: "...the president in his arrogance..." created the monument despite the Maine legislature having passed a bill saying "not now"
- Gov Paul LePage: land donor Roxanne Quimby's lobbyists staged an "end run" around the will of Mainers
The best quote so far though comes from Maine Department of Agriculture, Conservation and Forestry Commissioner Walter Whitcomb (a LePage appointee) regarding the value of Quimby's gift to the Feds:
"The land ... isn’t exactly Yellowstone or the Grand Canyon..."
