The Big Idea:
Per this report just released by the Irish Central Statistics Office, in the period June-August 2016 overseas visits to Ireland were up 10.8% from the same period 12 months previous.
Some key numbers:
- 3,088,000 total overseas visits to Ireland
- 1,132,500 (37%) from Great Britain
- 1,096,200 (35%) from Europe
- 667,600 (22%) from North America
- 191,700 (6%) from other areas
- Numbers of visits from all of these areas increased from the same period 12 months previous.
- Trips abroad by Irish residents increased by 1.8% to 2,357,600.
It's good to see that visits from the UK held up in the period June-August despite the post-referendum weakness and instability of the GBP. It would be very useful to be able to see July and August data - because we know that UK outbound has been down somewhat since the Brexit vote - but unfortunately the report doesn't include monthly data.
