When Majorca-based Lowcostholidays failed in summer 2016, the Ireland Commission for Aviation Regulation (CAR) paid 3.5M euro to repatriate Irish tourists stranded abroad.
Because of that and other draws, the fund from which that 3.5M euro came has been drawn down to only 1.8M euro, and needs to be replenished.
To do that, CAR will collect a surcharge from agents and operators, and those amounts - maybe 3 to 5 euro per person per trip - will likely be passed along to consumers in 2018.
