Phocuswright found that 66% of Americans took one or more leisure trips in 2016, down from 72% in 2015.

Trips/year and trip spend were down also.

Phocuswright speculates that underlying causes might include financial worries, contentious US election year and increased terrorism threat abroad.

Also in 2016 more American travelers stayed at hotels, private accommodations became more popular, Millennials became a more important market, and use of mobile devices for researching and booking travel increased.

Looks like hoteliers need to strengthen positioning against private accommodations, while also providing interesting offers for Millennials and being findable and bookable via mobile devices.

You can buy the full report from Phocuswright for $1495.
