Posted 23 October 2017:

Preliminary May 2017 data for arrivals from the USA's top 20 source markets show visits down 6.6% for the month, down 1.2% YTD.

May arrivals were down by amounts ranging from 2.5% (Sweden) to 22.3% (Brazil) for 12 of the top 20 countries.

Arrivals from Canada and Mexico - both of which alone account for more than 4X the arrivals from #3 UK - were down 6.1% and 10.6%, respectively.

Shrinkage may be due in part to the strong USD, and the US political climate following the 2016 election.

Biggest gains were in arrivals from South Korea (+17.5%), Taiwan (+13.3%) and Ireland (+9.0%).

In May, the USA may have had an advantage over some European destinations in perceived safety. It remains to be seen if more recent US terror attacks will temper that.
