NTTO data show that visitors from #5 US source market China spent US$33B in the USA in 2016 - more than visitors from any other country.
If that's true, each Chinese visitor spent $9200 per visit.
Is all of that really tourism spending? The Chinese government thinks not, and is working on measures to prevent cash from being expatriated and invested outside China.
Being unable to distinguish actual spending on tourism services from other inflows of cash from China poses a serious measurability problem for US tourism.
Anyone have any idea on how to fix this?
