Birmingham expects to be the beneficiary of more than 500M GBP incremental visitor spend in 2022.
As a tourist destination, the city has come a long way in the past 20 years. Average hotel occupancy in CY2016 was 75%, peaking at 99% in high season.
Will there be enough currently-existing hotel rooms for all those additional visitors expected in 2022? If not, can enough new ones be built in time? Or will Birmingham become another Dublin - a city from which its national tourist board is doing its best to redirect tourists to other parts of its country?
