Portland Press Herald reports that its analysis of economic impact of cruise ships on the city for the period 2008-2017 finds that fees collected rarely cover debt service, maintenance and improvements associated with the Ocean Gateway terminal.
But some Portland-area tourism businesses clearly benefit from the cruise ship traffic.
And if Bay Ferries "The Cat" moves it Maine operations to Bar Harbor - as it's currently threatening to do - the city will lose about $200K in revenues annually. A decision on this may come as eraly as this week. (See Related Article, below.)
