The US Department of State has set a Level 2: Exercise Increased Caution travel advisory for the Bahamas because "Violent crime, such as burglaries, armed robberies and sexual assault is common, even during the day and in tourist areas."
Also "Watercraft are often not maintained" and "Jet-ski opeators have been known to commit sexual assaults against tourists."
Areas cited as being particularly dangerous include:
- New Providence, Paradise and Grand Bahama islands
- Sand Trap area of Nassau
- Over the Hill south of Shirley Street and the Fish Fry at Arawak City in Nassau, especially at night
