France abandons 2020 tourism goal blaming 'gilets jaunes' and Brexit

The French finance ministry last week announced that it has abandoned its goal of receiving 100M foreign visitors in 2020 - a goal set in 2014 by the previous government.

The current government blames the 'gilets jaunes' protests against President Emmanuel Macron that began in November 2018, along with political uncertainties and the weak GBP related to Brexit.

The UK FCO recently issued a travel warning for France because of continued, sometimes violent 'gilets jaunes' protests and heavy police presence.

The UK is France's #1 international tourism market.
