New privately funded Mexico national destination marketing organization Visit Mexico has opened its first US office in NYC.
Previously, since April 2019 - following the closure of Mexico's in-destination tourism offices by order of President Andrés Manuel López Obrador in order to free up $300M annually to pay for construction of the Mayan Train on the Yucatan Peninsula - personnel of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs had been tasked with promoting Mexico tourism abroad.
The NYC office is being established by a group of local businessmen under a partnership agreement with Visit Mexico, and will operate as Visit Mexico USA. Accordingly, Mexico's national tourism advertising, marketing and PR has been privatized - a unique situation. Organizers plan to secure ongoing funding from partnerships with hotels, liquor vendors, banks, credit-card companies and other businesses expected to be the beneficiaries of the promotion of Mexico.
Visit Mexico plans to open additional offices in Canada, Japan and Europe.
