The German Federal Foreign Office on Friday announced in a post on its website that effective 0:00 AM German time on Monday 20 December 2021 the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland including all British Overseas Territories, Isle of Man and Channel Islands are considered to be "areas of [COVID-19] variants of concern" and that airlines, railways and other carriers "may not transport any persons from these countries to Germany."
Similar restrictions were newly applied to the following countries at 0:00 on Sunday 19 December:
- Andorra
- Denmark including the Faroe Islands and Greenland
- France including Reunion
- Lebanon
- Norway
The only exceptions are:
- German citizens and permanent residents and spouses, partners and minor children living in the same household
- Persons transiting through Germany without leaving the airport
- A "few other special cases"
