The Greater Bangor CVB has proposed to the City Council that a tourism improvement district be created and a lodging tax instituted to raise funds for marketing Bangor as a destination, and generating business for the city's hotels.
As proposed, this scheme would assess a 2% surcharge on hotel room receipts, which would raise about $1M annually, to be collected by the City of Bangor, then paid out to the CVB to be spent on destination marketing.
The majority of Bangor hotel managements are said to favor the proposal.
A similar initiative is being pursued in Portland.
