International visitation to the US recovering strongly
The US National Travel and Tourism Office (NTTO) of the US Department of Commerce reports that in September 2022 total overseas arrivals to the US were up by 220.1% vs. September 2021.
Overseas arrivals for 2022 year-to-date as of 30 September were up by 213.4% yoy.
World regions of residence of the 2,288.874 September overseas arrivals who stayed one or more nights in the US were:
- Western Europe 42.5%
- Eastern Europe 3.0%
- Asia 19.0%
- Middle East 4.0%
- Africa 1.6%
- Oceania 4.6%
- South America 16.1%
- Central America (excluding Mexico) 4.7%
- Caribbean 4.5%
Also in September there were 235,331 air arrivals from Mexico.
Numbers of arrivals from Canada and land arrivals from Mexico were not yet available at time of publication.
September was the 11th consecutive month with more than one million overseas arrivals.
Overseas arrival numbers in September were 65.7% of pre-pandemic 2019 level, up from 64.6% in August 2022.
Top US ports of entry in September were:
- New York JFK (2.54M)
- Miami MIA (1.60M)
- Los Angeles LAX (1.50M)
Top overseas points of departure (excluding Canada and Mexico) were:
- London LHR (1.31M)
- Paris CDG (658K)
- Frankfurt FRA (618K)
