China begins to reopen to international visitors

In a big step toward reopening for tourism, the PRC government has announced that international inbound travelers will no longer have to undergo mandatory quarantining.

As of 8 January 2023, inbound travelers will only have to provide proof of a negative COVID test taken within 48 hours of departure, and will not be subject to 5 days of hotel quarantine and 3 days of self-isolation as is now the case.

Restrictions on numbers of inbound airline flights and passenger will also end.

Under the government's "zero covid" policy, China has essentially been closed to visits from outside its borders since March 2020.

The government has further said that relaxation of restrictions on outbound travel will be forthcoming soon.
