Maine Lodging Fee LD1893 public hearing today at 1 PM
The Taxation Committee of the Maine Legislature today Tuesday 23 January 2024 at 1 PM will hold a public hearing on public hearing on LD 1893: "An Act to Allow a Municipality to Impose a Fee on Short-term Rentals for the Benefit of That Municipality."
This bill introduced by Rep. Tiffany Strout of Harrington would allow a municipality - if authorized by a referendum vote of residents - to impose a fee on proceeds from any lodgings that are subject to the 9% Maine Lodging Tax. This fee would not be subject to any rate cap, and the revenues could be used however the municipality wishes.
Note that there would be no requirement for municipalities to use any of the funds collected to promote or otherwise benefit tourism.
To testify live or via Zoom, or to submit testimony, you must register no later than 1230 today using this link.
