Rome mayor Virginia Raggi has instituted a ban on tour buses driving near the city's most historic landmarks, effective 1 January 2019.
Intent is to protect the city's archeological heritage and also reduce air and noise pollution in the inner city.
The city of Venice has introduced a similar ban, for similar reasons.
Tourism businesses including tour operators, restaurants, retailers and the attractions themselves are concerned about loss of trade. But the mayor's decision is a good one, strategically, from which all will ultimately benefit.
