David Posted 09 April 2018:

EU and UK officials have agreed on setting aside a period of 5 weeks right now to attempt to resolve the future of the Ireland-NI border post-Brexit.

The UK has proposed allowing most businesses to continue to trade across the border and be exempt from tariffs, under rules closely mirroring those of the EU.

The EU favors having NI remain part of the EU customs union and single market. The NI DUP oppose this plan. And because UK PM Theresa needs the support of the DUP to keep her government in power, she has rejected it.

A UK government spokesperson said last week:

"...Our priority remains avoiding a hard border, while respecting the constitutional and economic integrity of the UK..."

A return to a hard border could be catastrophic for the tourism industries of both Northern Ireland and the Republic.
