ONS Head of International Migration Statistics Nicola White said:
“These results indicate that the EU referendum result may be influencing people’s decision to migrate into and out of the UK, particularly EU and EU8 citizens.”
Shortage of EU citizens to work in hospitality and tourism businesses is a major concern for UK employers - similar to concerns of US employers about shortage of temporary workers entering the US from Eastern Europe and elsewhere on H-2B visas.
A underlying problem in both countries is the unwillingness of natives to work in low-paying service jobs.
And having non-local persons in customer-facing positions makes delivering a rewarding visitor experience more challenging for destinations, lodging properties, restaurants and local tours.
