Insurance crisis could end all EU motorsport

Autosport

A bizarre ruling made by the ECJ in 2014 requires unlimited 3rd-party liability insurance be carried by anyone using any kind of motorized transport anywhere in the EU, on private venues as well as on public highways.

Think lawnmowers, motorized wheelchairs, etc.

The EC issued a "Public Consultation" notice of review of that ruling on 28 July 2017, with a deadline for public comment of 20 October 2017.

Another example of EU over-regulation.

Let's hope for a rational outcome.

The EC's public consultation questionnaire includes these questions relevant to motorsport:

Q29: What types of vehicles, if any, should be excluded from the scope of MID at EU level?

Q30: Should compulsory MTPL [i.e. motor third party liability] insurance cover accidents resulting from agricultural, construction, industrial, motor sports or fairground activities?

Q31: Should compulsory MTPL insurance cover accidents that occur on areas that the public are not allowed (legally) to access?

Let's hope that the Motorsports Industry Association and all its members have sent intelligent responses to the EC, and that rationality prevails in the ultimate outcome of this review.
