Motorsport UK, the organizers of Wales Rally GB 2020, regretfully announced yesterday the cancellation of the 76th running of the UK round of the FIA World Rally Championship which had been scheduled for 29 October-1 November 2020.
This event - which would have been also the concluding round of both the FIA Junior World Rally Championship and the British Rally Championship - was expected to draw over 100,000 spectators to mid and north Wales.
Motorsport UK Chairman David Richards CBE said:
"While significant progress is being made to combat the virus, there remains considerable uncertainty regarding mass gatherings, social distancing and travel restrictions, plus the possibility of a resurgence of viral transmission later in the year...We have been closely monitoring the guidance issued by Government and it is becoming increasingly clear that it is impossible to make plans with any certainty for such major events in the autumn..."
A serious blow to Wales and UK tourism, for sure.
